Hinomoto survives the Kabane, undead creatures with iron-protected hearts, by sheltering in stations connected by armored trains. Ikoma builds a weapon able to pierce them, but during an attack he is infected and stops the virus before losing his min…d, becoming a Kabaneri; alongside Mumei he protects the Kotetsujo while frightened humans question whether either of them is still human.

It breaks away from the usual zombie anime with a steampunk Japan that only survives on armored trains and a half-infected protagonist capable of breaking iron hearts.
