After losing their mother in the bombing of Kobe, teenager Seita becomes responsible for his young sister Setsuko. They leave a relative's home and shelter in an abandoned bunker, believing they can manage alone; scarcity, pride and the indifference… of adults turn their attempt to preserve a normal childhood into an increasingly desperate struggle against hunger.
You should watch it because it tells the war from something as close as two brothers trying to eat, play and stay together when the adults can no longer help them.
It's a good fit if you're looking for an intimate anti-war drama and have the heart for a really sad movie.
Unlike almost all war anime, it does not look at the war from the front: it reduces it to hunger, pride, and two brothers who are also abandoned by their own society.
