After losing their mother in the bombing of Kobe, teenager Seita becomes responsible for his young sister Setsuko. They leave a relative's home and shelter in an abandoned bunker, believing they can manage alone; scarcity, pride and the indifference… of adults turn their attempt to preserve a normal childhood into an increasingly desperate struggle against hunger.
